TEACHING PHYLOSOPHY

To bring a solid understanding of music reading, theory and expressive musical performance to students of all levels and capabilities.  There is a strong goal to build a respect and passion for many kinds of music, ultimately allowing students to express their creative ideas through the language of music.

The Piano Suite Inc. provides private piano instruction to children between the ages of 4 - 18 years of age in the form of private weekly instruction time, in addition to a monthly group class.  Instruction is provided by Angela Mitchell-Simonson

Angela graduated from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign with a B.S. in Music Education, specializing in Piano Pedagogy (the science of teaching piano).  There, she studied pedagogy with Reid Alexander, former Director of Piano Pedagogy Studies at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.  While at the U of I, U-C she also student taught with Tony Caramia, currently Director of Piano Pedagogy Studies at the Eastman School of Music.  She has 28 years of music teaching experience providing private piano and group class theory & performance.

As a school aged student, Angela studied private piano with Jean Vitale in Springfield, Illinois.  After graduation from Springfield High School in 1984, she went on to work with Claire Richards, Anna McGrosso and Joel Shapiro in the ungraduate piano department at U of I, U-C.  She continued to study with Mrs. McGrosso throughout her twenties.

Angela has pursued continuing education opportunities through MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) conferences and The National Pedagogy conference.
